The Memorial Day Parade
This Year in East Orange
But Playing with the Central High Band of Newark
Late Sunday afternoon, we had a
visit from three EOUMB Alumni. They had agreed to play with the
Central High School Band of Newark in tomorrow's Memorial Day
Parade in East Orange, but they needed instruments. Fortunately
we had just what they required!
L-R: Joshua Reserve, Alumnus from
Delaware State University, Adam Engers, Alumnus from Cheyney
University, and Shaquel Peters, Alumnus from Cheyney University
and now working as a line cook. Playing (L-R) Sousaphone,
Mellophone, and Baritone Horn.
After posing for a quick photo,
they get serious and begin to tune up their instruments in the
They are a little on the loud
side for the front yard, so they move into the back yard to
practice some of their tunes. Once they are satisfied with the
instruments they chose, they pack them up and bring them home to
practice some more, probably into the wee hours of the morning so
they will be ready for tomorrow's parade. I'll try to be there
and get some photos.
Oops! The Parade was cancelled
because of rain sprinkles. The veterans still had their memorial
ceremony, but it was indoors. I got a little damp riding over to
city hall and back on my tricycle, but nothing serious. Then the
rain came down and lasted most of the afternoon.
The alumni returned the
instruments this evening. They spent the day practicing at home
because they have another gig in Montclair soon, so when they are
ready, we'll start a new story.
